Frequently asked questions on Private COVID-19 testing

※A new regulation will be in effect on October 11th. Please click here for details.

Below are frequently asked questions by those who perform PCR or quantitative antigen tests to relax the quarantine period. If you are using a qualitative antigen test kit for a test to shorten your quarantine period, please refer to warnings in the "Manual for submission of negative test result."

1.About testing methods

Questions Answers
1-1

Can the test be done by mail?
(Additional question: Will the government accept testing done by mail even if the person’s identity cannot be verified?)

Yes. Some people may live far from a testing facility and be unable to get to medical facilities without public transportation, so testing by mail will also be accepted. However, as a security measure, the government may publish the names of any persons found to have falsely submitted a test result. Please also note that, depending on the postal situation, test results may not be available on the date sought (which would mean the quarantine cannot end early).

(Additional question: The government does not actively encourage the use of mail for testing. However, some people may live far from a testing facility and be unable to get to medical facilities without public transportation, so testing by mail may be accepted as a reasonable option. Plus, as stated, as a security measure, the government may publish the names of any persons found to have falsely submitted a test result.)

1-2

Are NEAR and LAMP testing methods counted as PCR tests?

Yes. More specifically, the valid testing methods include real time PCR, LAMP, TMA, SmartAmp, and NEAR (e.g., ID-NOW). When submitting test results via the Health and Location Monitoring App (MySOS), users must select the testing method actually used.

1-3

Are swab/smear and saliva sampling methods both accepted?

Yes. The valid sampling methods include nasopharyngeal swab, saliva, combined oro-nasopharyngeal swab, and nasal swab. (Nasal swab is valid only on Nucleic acid amplification test.)

2.About test results

Questions Answers
2-1

What if the name of medical testing facility (or lab) is different from the name of the medical facility that issued the test result notification?

Please issue a notification of test results that indicates the name of the testing facility as it appears in the "List of Private Testing Facilities for Entrants Seeking to Shorten Quarantine." Alternatively, please change the name registered in the list of testing facilities (e.g., in parentheses, add the name of the testing facility as it will appear in the notification of test results). For instructions on how to change the details of the list of testing facilities, please refer to answer 3-3.

2-2

Is it necessary to issue a negative test result certificate? What must be included in a notification of test results?

It does not have to be exactly in the form of a negative test result certificate. A document will be acceptable in any format (paper, e-mail, etc.) as long as it clearly shows that it is for the individual concerned, and also states the test date, test result, testing method, and name of the testing facility.

Questions Answers

We are a medical facility. Will a person who comes for a test on the same day our facility was registered on the "List of Private Testing Facilities for Entrants Seeking to Shorten Quarantine" still be eligible for a notification of change in quarantine period?

Yes. However, for a newly registered testing facility, a negative test result must be uploaded between the hours of 17:00 and 18:00 (5 and 6 p.m.).

3-2

We are a medical facility. When being listed, is it possible to have a comment added to state, for example, “pre-booking required” or “only for our own employees”?

There are currently no plans to include separate comments for individual testing facilities. However, the wording already encourages all users to contact a testing facility in advance. For future consideration, we are accepting comments on what information to list for each testing facility.

3-3

We are a medical facility. We would like to register, modify, or delete our listing as a testing facility for entrants who wish to change their quarantine period. What do we need to do?

Please register using this form.

*Note that this form is only for medical facilities.

Please note that even if a facility is not registered on the "List of Private Testing Facilities" it is still possible to be listed on the "List of Private Testing Facilities for Entrants Seeking to Shorten Quarantine."

MySOS notifications, warnings and video calls are still arriving, even after a notification was sent via the MySOS app to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare with proof of a negative test result in the prescribed manner on or after the third day of quarantine, and even after receiving notification of acceptance of the test result. When will the quarantine actually end?

If the test was done using a prescribed method on or after the third day after the date of entry to Japan and a negative test result notification was submitted via the MySOS app to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and you have received a notification of acceptance, the quarantine at home can end starting on or after the fourth day, as summarized below. If the submission is accepted, the last day of quarantine (as displayed on the MySOS app) will be the same date as when the submission was accepted.

  • Test taken on 3rd day and notification of submission acceptance received on 3rd day: Quarantine ends on 4th day
  • Test taken on 3rd day and notification of submission acceptance received on or after 4th day: Quarantine ends at time when notification is received
  • Test taken on or after 4th day and notification of submission acceptance received on or after 4th day: Quarantine ends at time when notification is received

It is not necessary to respond to incoming notifications, warnings, and video calls via the MySOS app after the quarantine at home has ended. You can uninstall the app after your designated quarantine period has ended. The MySOS app on your device will no longer be linked with the Health Monitoring Center for Overseas Entrants (HCO) mode as of 08:00 (8 a.m.) on the day after your quarantine ends.
